Dotted Chestnut
Conistra rubiginea

([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775) 2260 / 73.197

Morley's Final Catalogue: Not noted from the county in Morley's time. He states: Neither of the much-coveted C. rubiginea et erythrocephala, F., occurs: the former might well do so, but the latter is confined to our south litoral counties.

Recent Suffolk Status: Fairly common and widespread.
The first county record was in 2007, at Bawdsey (M. Deans). From 2011 onwards it started to appear in small numbers in both VC25 and VC26. Numbers have increased and it has spread to many sites across the county although it still seems absent from parts of the west although this could be due to a lack of recorders in that part of Suffolk.

Life History: Single-brooded. Regularly recorded on Ivy blossom as well as at light. The adults hibernate and emerge again in the spring on mild nights.

Identification: Unmistakeable.

Habitat: Woodland, hedgerows, scrub areas, gardens.

Recorded in 33 (57%) of 58 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 2007.
Last Recorded in 2023.
