Morley's Final Catalogue: A ubiquitous sylvan species, persisting in open country long after the timber has been felled e.g. at Monks Soham and Gorleston. Abundant in woods at Bentley, &c.

Recent Suffolk Status: Local. Some evidence of a recent decline in the county.

Life history: Single-brooded.

Identification: Quite a variable species, but mainly yellowish in Suffolk. Small square-spot is darker in colour and less variegated. Purple clay is much darker in colour.

Habitat: Woodland, gardens.

Recorded in 53 (91%) of 58 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1940.
Last Recorded in 2023.
