Morley's Final Catalogue: A common species everywhere from Bentley Woods to Gorleston: Suffolk (Wood's Index 1854); Waldringfield (James, Entom. March 1892), frequent there (Wlr) and at Monks Soham light; Henham Park, &c.

Recent Suffolk Status: Widespread and very common. Numbers are boosted by immigration. Flies into October now in Suffolk.

Life history: Single-brooded. Very common at light, sugar and flowers. Larve have been found in the spring at night, feeding on various low growing plants.

Identification: Langmaid's yellow underwing is very similar. There are no features on the upperside of these moths that are reliable, although Langmaid's can be darker. The main features are the upperside of the hindwing, which on Langmaid's should have a thick black border all the way around the yellow, creating a yellow spot. Lesser-broad bordered yellow underwing has more extensive yellow and less black, with the black not all the way around the yellow. Also, on the underside of the forewing Lesser-broad bordered has black finger projections that extend into the outer area. Langmaid's has this edge smooth or diffuse.
