Lozotaenia forsterana

(Fabricius, 1781)1002 / 49.029

Morley’s Final Catalogue: By no means frequently seen; not among ivy at Monks Soham. Occasionally at Ipswich in June and July; Walberswick (Ctw); Beccles (Crf); Lowestoft (Bd); Gorleston (D). Taken, doubtless near Bury, by Wratislaw.

Recent Status: Common in Suffolk.

Life Style: A single brooded species that flies from May to August. The larvae feed between spun leaves of a very wide range of herbaceous, deciduous and evergreen plants, shrubs and trees.
The larvae hibernate. They pupate in the larval habitation.

Identification: A large and broad winged species that rests flat against the substrate. A light brown or grey forewing has two dark marks on the costa and one on the dorsum. The dorsal mark is diffuse on the posterior edge and may join in a narrow fascia with the first costal mark with a dark suffusion on the dorsum. The only similar species is Choristoneura hebenstreitella but that species has a basal patch and the male has a costal fold.

Recorded in 38 (66%) of 58 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1965.
