Hysterophora maculosana

(Haworth, 1811)924 / 49.096

Morley’s Final Catalogue: Common among wild-hyacinth. Copdock (Hkg); Bentley Woods on birch in May 1932 (D), Ipswich, and Creeting on broom in 1933 (Mly); Lowestoft (Bd); Shipmeadow (Ctw); Ashby and Barton Mills (Mly).

Recent Status: A scarce species in Suffolk that is found mainly in the south of the county.

Life Style: A single brooded species that flies by day and night and comes to light during May, June and July. The larvae feed on the seeds inside the pods of Hyacinthoides non-scripta. It is not known if it will also feed on H. hispanica. They move from the foodplant fully fed to bore into a nearby plant stem where they hibernate and pupate in the spring.

Identification: A species with a white or pale ochre wing extensively mottled grey. The grey mottling coalesces into a basal and a central patch. The central patch has discrete black spots. There are brown markings on a thoracic scale tuft and scattered marks across the wing especially on the termen and apex. The species resembles Cochylis species but lacks any of the clearly defined markings of that genus.
The larvae can be identified from the foodplant and colouration. More Info
