Helcystogramma rufescens

Morley’s Final Catalogue: Common along our whole coast-line in July. Copdock (Hkg); rare at Monks Soham light during 1915-36 (Mly); Orford (Gibbs); Aldeburgh, Flixton and Southwold (Ctw), at the last in 1903 (Mly); Lowestoft (Bd). Tuddenham, on Breck (Wrn).

Recent Status: A common species in Suffolk.

Life Style: A single brooded species flying from June to August with a smaller second brood through to October. The larvae roll the leaf of various grass species. They graze the leaf from inside the roll. They change leaves and pupate in one that has not been fed on.

Identification: An easily recognised species that has narrow shoulders appearing roughly triangular at rest. It is a shade of pale bright ochre or brown and darker between the veins sometimes with scattered darker brown scales and one or two dots centrally.
