Morley’s Final Catalogue: One example, captured by Bloomfield at Lowestoft denes on 28 July 1871 and in Stainton's collection, was erroneously recorded (Ent. Annual 1872, p. 123 and EMM. 1893, pp. 213, 237) as Gelechia Strelicella, HS. (Suff. List 1890, 49). Several on sugar at Felixstow during both 1901-2 (Gibbs).

Recent Status: A species of sandy locations in Suffolk

Life Style: A single brooded species that can be found from June to September. The larvae feed in the spring following oviposition on the mosses Barbula convoluta and Brachythecium albicans. They pupate in a sand covered cocoon.

Identification: This species is similar to C. distinctella. They are a glossy dark brown variously speckled paler with an indistinct pale sub-terminal fascia and chequered wing tip. They have three small black dashes edged in front and behind with white. There is a tendency for C. distinctella to be a more uniform colour and C. fumatella to be more densely peppered and mottled paler but the difference is not sufficient always to allow their separation on sight.
