Bryotropha desertella

(Douglas, 1850)786 / 35.041

Morley’s Final Catalogue: One of our most profuse kinds. Everywhere on heaths in June at Foxhall, Wortham. &c; and on the coast denes in August at Sizewell, Southwold, &c., up to Yarmouth denes. Abundant throughout the Breck at Wangford warren, Brandon staunch, Eriswell, and Tuddenham (Mly).

Recent Status: This is a rare species and the Morley comment of ‘most profuse’ highlights the confusion with B. terrella.

Life Style: A single brooded species that can be found May to September. They come to light. The larvae feed from an upright silken tube on mosses, Syntrichia ruralis, Homolothecium lutescens or Rhyditiadelphus squarrosus. The larvae feed over the winter. They pupate in a firm sand covered cocoon.

Identification: This species is indistinguishable from the common and variable Bryotropha terrella without dissection. Pale specimens collected near the coast are most likely to be B. terrella. More Info
