Athrips mouffetella

(Linnaeus, 1758)762 / 35.085

Morley’s Final Catalogue: Feeds on honeysuckle. Found at Lowestoft in July (Bd) and at light beside Fritton Lake in August 1935 (Mly).

Recent Status: Locally common in Suffolk.

Life Style: A single brooded species flying in mid-summer that comes to light. The larvae feed during May and June from ova laid the previous year. They feed from a terminal cluster of leaves spun together on Lonicera periclymenum, L. xylosteum and Symphoricarpos rivularis. They pupate in a loose cocoon.

Identification: The moth is readily recognised as a mid-grey species with prominent black spots. It has a number of spots but four are usually dominant. There are spots on the termen.

The larvae have a dense white silken spinning on terminal shoots of the foodplant. They are dark grey to black with limited white spotting or streaks. They have a black head and prothoracic plate.
