Metzneria metzneriella

(Stainton, 1851)726 / 35.058

Morley’s Final Catalogue: A single example bred from seed-heads of knapweed at Timworth about 1910 (Nurse).

Recent Status: The species is less frequent in Suffolk than M. lappella.

Life Style: The moth is single brooded coming to light from May till August. The larvae feed on the seeds inside the seed-head of Centaurea species and Serratula tinctoria.

Identification: Metzneria metzneriella and M. lappella are very similar. M. metzneriella is smaller at 14 to 19mm wing-span than M. lappella at 16 to 20mm. Both species show two or three dots on the wing that are absent in other Suffolk Metzneria. M. lappella essentially shows longitudinal striping in the proximal two thirds of the wing and transverse (parallel to termen) striping in the terminal third. This patterning is still apparent in M. metzneriella but much less pronounced and especially so in the terminal third where there are fewer stripes. If a specimen suspected as M. metzneriella does not clearly show this difference then genitalia dissection is required to confirm the identification. More Info
