Metzneria lappella

(Linnaeus, 1758)724 / 35.056

Morley’s Final Catalogue: Common in Arctia lappa at Ipswich, Eyke and Glemham during 1930-5 (Whit.).

Recent Status: Metzneria lappella is the commonest Metzneria in Suffolk.

Life Style: A single brooded species flying at night and coming to light from early May to August. The larvae feed on the seeds inside the seed-heads of Arctium lappa and A. minus. They hibernate and pupate in a cocoon in the larval habitation.

Identification: Metzneria lappella and M. metzneriella are very similar. M. lappella is larger at 16 to 20mm wing-span than M. metzneriella at 14 to 19mm. Both species show two or three dots on the wing that are absent in other Suffolk Metzneria. M. lappella essentially shows longitudinal striping in the proximal two thirds of the wing and transverse (parallel to termen) striping in the terminal third. This patterning is still apparent in M. metzneriella but much less pronounced and especially so in the terminal third. More Info
