Agonopterix umbellana

(Fabricius, 1794)705 / 32.029

Morley’s Final Catalogue: Rarer than the last (nervosa) among gorse; unnoted in the west. Abundant on Rushmere Heath about 1898 (Baylis, Pyett); Foxhall in October 1899, and in the Gisleham sand-pit in 1928 (Mly); plentiful at Southwold during 1897 (Ctw). Benacre denes.

Recent Status: A common species where the foodplant grows.

Life Style: A single brooded species that hibernates. It is night flying and comes to light. The larvae feed from spun terminal shoots of Ulex or Genista pilosa. It pupates on the ground.

Identification: Usually easily recognised from the black or dark brown shading linked to the venation which has a break just before the termen. It has a rounded termen and shows the Agonopterix twin spot, commonly reduced to a single spot. The base colour is a shade of creamy ochre. The characteristic dark shading can sometimes be significantly reduced.
