Depressaria chaerophylli

Zeller, 1839682 / 32.047

Morley’s Final Catalogue: Rare at Ipswich electric lights in 1900 (Pyett); Leiston (Grey); Somerleyton (Bd); Benacre Broad at light in 1935 (Mly).

Recent Status: The second commonest Depressaria in Suffolk after D. radiella.

Life Style: A single brooded species that comes to light. It hibernates and flies from July till May. The larvae feed on the flowers and seeds of Chaerophyllum during mid-summer in a web tent. They pupate in a cocoon on the ground.

Identification: The moth is a well marked Depressaria that is sometimes confused with D. radiella, however it is smaller. D. chaerophylli has a characteristically marked thorax that will separate it from other species of the genus. It has a single row of prominent black dashes towards the termen. It has prominent marks along the costa except at the base and has no prominent markings on the basal half of the dorsum.
