Morley’s Final Catalogue: Not supposed to be rare on hawthorn and rowan. Taken at Bungay in 1903 by Mrs. Mann (Trans, i, 35), probably at light; and on 2 June 1935 in Fritton marshes (Mly).

Recent Status: Commoner than the related S. avellanella in Suffolk.

Life Style: A single brooded species flying from March to May and coming to light. The larvae feed on Prunus spinosa, Sorbus aucuparia and Crataegus. They pupate on the ground in a cocoon.

Identification: A strikingly marked species that differs from the similar S. avellanella by the dark streak starting away from the wing base. It is generally also wider and sometimes displays as an ‘S’ shape on the wing.
