Elachista poae

Stainton, 1855596 / 38.024

Morley’s Final Catalogue: Local and nearly confined to south England. Taken at Brandon staunch in late May 1932 (Morley).

Recent Status: A rare species in Suffolk.

Life Style: This is a double brooded species flying during May, June and August. The larvae mine the leaves of Glyceria maxima. They pupate in a slight cocoon on a leaf away from the mine.

Identification: The moth is a dark winged species with whitish markings. The markings are obscure in the male but stronger in the female. The female has a distinctive zigzag fascia from the costa at one third meeting the dorsum at one half. There is a strong costal spot and opposing dorsal spot pre-tornus. The species has similarities to E. atricomella and also the smaller E. pomerana and a genitalia dissection is required for a record if the zigzag fascia cannot be seen clearly. More Info
The larvae mine downwards in a leaf in a narrow gallery from the oviposition site. They change leaves and mine upwards in the second leaf. They are an olive green with a light brown head and divided prothoracic plate. More Info
