Coleophora pennella

([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775)549 / 37.065

Morley’s Final Catalogue: The limit of its north-east range is Suffolk, where it is common among vipers-bugloss at Brandon (Barrett). Worlington in 1925 and Tuddenham in 1933 (Whit). ' On the Breck sands' (Entom. 1886, 82).

Recent Status: Records for Suffolk in Breckland and on the coast.

Life Style: A single brooded species that flies from May to July. The larvae mine leaves of Echium, Anchusa and Cynoglossum and possibly other Boraginacae and Compositae. They hibernate when young and pupate the year after oviposition.

Identification: A large pale and prominently striped species that can be identified by genitalia dissection.
The larvae make a small blotch mine and excise this for their first case in which they hibernate. In the following year they mine from the edge of leaves and extend their base with these blotch mines. The case will vary in appearance according to the host plant but will show consecutive cylinders of leaf projecting ventrally and dorsally. The anal opening is bivalve and the oral opening set at around 70 degrees to the long axis. More Info
