Coleophora hemerobiella

(Scopoli, 1763)523 / 37.039

Morley’s Final Catalogue: Many larvae in long, dark-brown cases, pretty surely of this species feeding on leaves of bird-cherry in Bentley Woods on 18 May 1935 (Morley, Doughty).

Recent Status: A well recorded species in Suffolk.

Life Style: The moth is single brooded flying by night and coming to light. It can be found during July. The larvae mine leaves of Crataegus, Prunus, Malus, Pyrus and Sorbus.

Identification: The adult moth is easily identified. It is an off white and heavily speckled with black or dark fuscous. The speckles coalesce to a small patch above the tornus. This may sometimes be absent.
The larvae initially form a small leaf mine that ends in a curved section that is excised for their first case in which they hibernate. This is gradually enlarged and curved almost to a circle. They feed until June when they aestivate/hibernate until the second year after oviposition. The final case in contrast is almost straight and quite slender. The appearance of the final case is dependent upon the foodplant. More Info
