Coleophora juncicolella

Stainton, 1851510 / 37.028

Morley’s Final Catalogue: Herringfleet (' Ent. Week. Intel. 1860, p. 1 7 2 : ' sic-misreferenced by Bloomfield). Taken by sweeping on the Breck sands in 1885 (Farren, Ent. 1886, 82); Sutton Heath in 1935.

Recent Status: A species of the Breckland and Sandlings heaths in Suffolk.

Life Style: A single brooded species that is day flying and can be found during June and July. The larvae feed by mining leaves of Calluna and Erica. They feed through the winter and pupate in early spring.

Identification: The moth is a light grey and stands out in the genus on its small size at 6 to 8 mm wingspan. This allows it to be identified from the imago along with it flying in afternoon sunshine and can be captured by sweeping over the food plants. If it is necessary to confirm identification this can be done by genitalia dissection using the Moths and Butterflies of Great Britain and Ireland as the reference for this.
The larvae construct a case by arranging mined leaves in a herring bone fashion. More Info
