Coleophora violacea

(Ström, 1783)509 / 37.026

Morley’s Final Catalogue: Not listed.

Recent Status: A few recent records for Suffolk.

Life Style: A single brooded species flying during May and June. It flies by day and also comes to light. The larvae feed from a portable case on a very wide range of leaves of deciduous trees and shrubs.

Identification: The moth is a shining fuscous or bronze fuscous. They are similar to C. fuscocuprella except for the antennae that are dark ringed in C. fuscocuprella are white and not ringed in the apical part in C. violacea. If necessary the moth can be identified by genitalia dissection.
The case which is similar to that of C. potentillae differs in the angle of the oral opening. In C. violacea it is 90 degrees but in C. potentillae after starting at 90 degrees is reduces to 30 to 50 degrees to the long axis for the final larval case. The first case is the excised initial mine. Thereafter the larvae cut rings around the hole of their mines and affix these to the oral end. The overall appearance and extent of projection depends upon the foodplant. More Info
