Coleophora alnifoliae

Barasch, 1934498 / 37.010

Morley’s Final Catalogue: Not Listed.

Recent Status: First Suffolk record from Dunwich in June 2017. The species is probably under-recorded.

Life Style: The moth flies during June, July and August. The larvae feed on Alnus species. They mine the leaves from a portable case. They may take one or two years to reach maturity and pupate attached to a twig in the year the adult will fly.

Identification: The moth is very similar in appearance to C. milvipennis which is common in Suffolk and also to C. adjectella and C. badiipennella. The moths have light ochreous wings with a pale streak along the costa from the base. The streak in C. alnifoliae is more clearly defined than in the other species. They are difficult to separate on the male genitalia but easier on the female genitalia which is very distinctive for C. alnifoliae. More Info
The larval foodplant will identify the species if the larval case can be spotted. It changes appearance as the larvae mature. They mine small blotches from the case. More Info
