Morley’s Final Catalogue: Occasionally on Monks Soham windows in June 1908-34 (Mly); Glemham Magna among wild-rose (Bloomf.); Flixton near Bungay (Ctw).

Recent Status: Reasonably well recorded in Suffolk.

Life Style: A single brooded species that flies in June and July. The larvae mine leaves of Rosa and occasionally Frangula from a portable case. They hibernate and pupate on the plant.

Identification: Three species C. lutipennella, C. gryphipennella and C. flavipennella are very similar as the adult moth and can only be reliably identified by dissection of the genitalia. They sit with their wings fairly flat at rest and are a buff, ochre or pale ferruginous colour. The males of C. gryphipennella are a more grey colour.
C. gryphipennella larvae feed on Rosa and has a case differing in appearance to the others. The bivalve case is constructed from mined leaf margins. It becomes less flattened as the larvae grow and construct further cases. More Info
