Epermenia aequidentellus

(Hofmann, 1867)484 / 47.004

Morley’s Final Catalogue: Not listed.

Recent Status: This species is found mainly around the coasts of southern Britain. It appears to have been on the increase from around 2010. The first Suffolk record was during November 2022.

Life Style: The moth flies at night and comes to light it has two generations in Britain flying from June to early August and from September to November. The larvae feed on leaves of Umbellifers. In Britain this currently stands at Daucus carota and Pimpinella saxifrage. As the species becomes commoner it is likely that other host species may be recorded. These include Anthriscus, Athamanta, Meum, Peucedanum, Thapsia and Torilis species. The pupae are held in a loose silk network on the ground or on the foodplant.

Identification: The moth is a narrow winged species with long dorsal cilia and three small scale tufts. The forewing is cream to ochre with dark spots and a chequered terminal quarter margin. There is a dark oblique fascia at two fifths. Darker specimens show two orange brown suffusions along the wing. The thorax is darker in the anterior half. More Info
The larvae feed in a full depth blotch mine and may move location. They may complete growth in a mine if the leaf is sufficient else they may feed externally from a loose silk web. They are a translucent yellow/green with a darker dorsal stripe, black spots and black head. More Info
