Orthotelia sparganella

Morley’s Final Catalogue: Bred from pupa cut out of burr-reed at Hemley (W H Bolton) and at Fritton (Wiltshire 1936). Waldringfield in 1924 (Wir); Bungay in 1902 (Mn); several flew to light beside Fritton Lake early in August 1933-7 (Mly, D.); Barham, taken by Nurse (Trans, i, 35).

Recent Status: A wetland species in Suffolk.

Life Style: A single brooded species flying during July and August and coming to light. The larvae mine leaves and stems of Sparganium, Iris and Glyceria maxima. They pupate in the larval habitation.

Identification: A large species of the Glyphipterigidae, that is easily recognised. A brownish ochre wing with darker spots above the dorsum and the veins all marked paler. Freshly emerged specimens often show a reddish purple suffusion terminally.
