Yponomeuta irrorella

(Hübner, 1796)429 / 16.006

Morley’s Final Catalogue: Not listed.

Recent Status: A rare species in Suffolk.

Life Style: A single brooded species that has been found during June and July. The larvae feed on Euonymus europaeus.

Identification: The moth is a larger species of Yponomeuta with white or light grey wings. They are suffused darker grey at a spot on the fold at one third, in the discal area, at the termen and sometimes along the costa before the apex. The cilia are grey.
The young larvae hibernate at the oviposition site and they feed gregariously from a web in spring. They leave the web to feed individually in the final instar and pupate in a cocoon on a leaf. The larvae are physically indistinguishable from those of Y. cagnagella.
