Scythropia crataegella

(Linnaeus, 1767)450 / 25.001

Morley’s Final Catalogue: Not listed.

Recent Status: A fairly common species in Suffolk.

Life Style: The moth is double brooded flying from May to September and coming to light. The larvae feed gregariously on Crataegus, Prunus and Cotoneaster. They pupate in the larval habitation.

Identification: An easily recognised species with an inclined resting posture, being pale with two dark bands and scattered spots and strigulae.
The larvae initially create a small blotch mine before leaving this to feed gregariously on a web over the foodplant. The autumn brood larva returns to a small blotch in order to spin a hibernaculum in which they pass the winter. In spring they return to an external web in which they pupate. More Info for larvae pre-hibernation.
