Choreutis nemorana

(Hübner, [1799])389a / 48.0071

Morley’s Final Catalogue: Not listed

Recent Status: The species has been extending its range from areas where figs are native. First recorded in Belgium during 2009. First recorded in England during 2014 and found breeding in Suffolk for the first time in Lowestoft during 2021. It is likely to have arrived in Suffolk as an immigrant.

Life Style: A double-brooded species that hibernates as adult. The larvae feed on Ficus carica. They initially feed on the upper parenchyma layer of the leaf and latter from a loose web with tell-tail frass eventually feeding the full depth of the leaf and leaving the veins intact thus skeletonising the leaf. They fold over a leaf edge where they pupate in a tough white cocoon.

Identification: A small moth with a broad triangular shape at rest that stands proud on all legs. The colour is a bright shade of brown and may show 4 bands of varied shades with whitish fascia between. The head and legs are predominantly white scaled making it distinct from Choreutis pariana.
