Phyllonorycter comparella

(Duponchel, 1843)365 / 15.087

Morley’s Final Catalogue: Not listed.

Recent Status: A rare British species. Records increasing in Suffolk.

Life Style: A double brooded species that hibernates as adult. The moth has been recorded during July and August and from October to May. The larva feed on Populus x-canescens, P. alba and P. nigra. They pupate in a cocoon in the larval habitation.

Identification: The adult moth is similar to P. pastorella now recorded in Suffolk. They are white or light ochre peppered with brown scales coalescing into marks along the costa and dorsum that are dark followed by a clear white patch. There is a dark terminal spot or streak and a dark line in the cilia. More Info Genitalia dissection is required to separate the adult moths for a record if not reared from a mine.
The larvae form small blotch mines on the underside of the leaf that do not significantly distort the leaf and have only very fine creases. The foodplant and mine identify the species. More Info
