Phyllonorycter coryli

(Nicelli, 1851)342 / 15.064

Morley’s Final Catalogue: Usually a common kind among hazel. Holbrook and bred at Bentley, 1931-3 (Whit.); Belstead (Mly); Glemham (Bloomf.).

Recent Status: A common Suffolk species.

Life Style: A double brooded species that has been found from May to September. The larvae feed on Corylus avellana. They pupate in a cocoon in the larval habitation. The pupal stage passes the winter.

Identification: The adult moth shows a classic Phyllonorycter patterning. The ground colour is brownish rather than yellow or orange and the dorsal and costal marks are narrower than P. blancardella. The first dorsal mark does not have a noticeable bend. The basal streak is narrow and simple. Genitalia dissection is required for identification.
The larvae create a small white blister blotch on the upper side of a leaf. It often scarcely distorts the leaf until nearly mature. There can be more than one on a leaf. More Info
