Phyllonorycter cerasicolella

(Herrich-Schäffer, 1855)330 / 15.050

Morley’s Final Catalogue: Holbrook, Ipswich and Hasketon, bred in 1930-34 (Whit.).

Recent Status: Commonly recorded in Suffolk.

Life Style: A double brooded species flying during May, July and August. The larvae feed on Prunus avium and P. cerasus. The fully grown autumn generation hibernate. They pupate in the larval habitation.

Identification: A classically marked Phyllonorycter species. The basal streak has a wiggle before it ends. The first dorsal mark is quite narrow and long with a bend. There are black scales centrally in the terminal third. P. cerasicolella and P. spinicolella adults can only be identified by genitalia dissection. More Info MBGBI also provide good images.
The larvae produce small blister blotches on the underside of leaves. British literature states that the Prunus species fed on by P. cerasicolella and P. spinicolella differ but this is not upheld by European literature.
