Phyllonorycter hostis

([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775)327 / 15.047

Morley’s Final Catalogue: Bred at Holbrook and Bentley in 1932-5 (Whit.); Blvthbro Wood 1936 (Mly).

Recent Status: A scarce species in Suffolk but may be under-recorded owing to identification constraints.

Life Style: A double brooded species that has been found during May and August. The larvae feed on Malus, Sorbus torminalis and Cydonia oblonga. They pupate in a cocoon in the larval habitation. They pass the winter as the pupal stage.

Identification: P. blancardella and P. hostis are very similar. They have the classic patterning of the genus but the terminal spot is small. The dorsal marks in particular are broad. There are dark scales centrally in the posterior third of the wing. The basal streak is broad and the dorsal edge is angled before it ends in a point. P. blancardella has forms where the first dorsal and basal streak are so large as to be confluent and also has very dark ground colour forms. These are not found in P. hostis. P. hostis requires genitalia dissection for identification. More Info
P. hostis can also be recorded by rearing from larvae on Cydonia oblonga. The larvae create small blister blotch mines within a leaf.
