Phyllonorycter platani

(Staudinger, 1870)321a / 15.041

Morley’s Final Catalogue: Not listed.

Recent Status: The species first appeared in Britain in 1989 and has spread rapidly. It is widespread and becoming common in Suffolk.

Life Style: A double brooded species that has been recorded from April to September. The larvae feed on Platanus species. They pupate in a light cocoon in the larval habitation. The pupal stage passes the winter.

Identification: An easily recognised, strongly marked species. The moth has a golden ochre ground colour with markings of silver white edged with silvery grey. All the markings are of roughly equal strength. There are four costal, four dorsal, a curved basal streak and a streak along and just above the dorsum at the base. The two basal streaks continue on the thorax. The first costal mark extends along the costa towards the base and the terminal three pairs of marks usually join. There is a small discrete black terminal dot and cilial line.
The larvae create blister blotch mines on either side of the leaf. Those on the underside are usually constrained by the veins. Distortion is limited. There are commonly several per leaf. More Info
