Phyllonorycter kuhlweiniella

(Zeller, 1839)319 / 15.038

Morley’s Final Catalogue: A very local kind, in oak-leaves. Observed at only Brandon (Lord Walsingham), Mildenhall in May 1935 (Mly) and bred to south of Thetford in 1932-5 (Whit.).

Recent Status: A rare species both nationally and in Suffolk.

Life Style: This is a double brooded species that has been recorded from May to August. The larvae feed on Quercus. They pupate in the larval habitation without a cocoon. The pupal stage passes the winter.

Identification: The moth superficially resembles P. geniculella, P. acerifoliella and P. joannisi in being white with marks of ochre and dark scales. There are five evenly spaced costal and three dorsal marks from close to the base. The first three of each are paired. The first are normally a complete fascia. The second often is. There is often an extension from the tip of the second costal mark that joins a suffusion to the wing tip and connects to the final three costal marks.
The larvae create a small blister blotch frequently on the edge of a leaf lobe which causes it to fold over. There is less distortion when placed away from the edge. More Info
