Stainton, 1848314 / 15.021

Morley’s Final Catalogue: Ipswich, Hemley, Butley, Redgrave in 1932-4, bred (Whit).

Recent Status: A scarce Suffolk species. Becoming harder to find in recent years.

Life Style: This is a double brooded species that may be found from May till September. The larvae mine Artemisia vulgaris leaves. They pupate in a light brown cocoon usually on the ground.

Identification: The moth is a small narrow winged Gracilariinae that stands erect on its front legs. It has grey wings with ill defined whitish markings. Primarily four pairs of opposing spots that may be joined into narrow oblique fascia. There may also be a small terminal dot.
The larvae initially create a long epidermal gallery on the underside of a leaf before feeding an inflated blotch on the upper surface of a leaf. The larvae are red when fully grown and ready to pupate. The mined leaves of the foodplant may colour up yellow, red or purple. More Info
