Caloptilia semifascia

(Haworth, 1828)290 / 15.012

Morley’s Final Catalogue: Not listed.

Recent Status: A locally common species.

Life Style: A double brooded species that hibernates. It can be found throughout the year. The larvae feed on Acer species, primarily Acer campestre. They pupate under a membrane on the underside of a leaf.

Identification: Caloptilia species stand erect on their front legs at rest. C. semifascia is a very variably marked species. The forewings and front leg femur and tibia are a general brown colour speckled, spotted and shaded darker. The colour may vary from ochreous cream to dark brown and tinged, orange, red or purple. A common form has a white oblique mark on the costa at one third that bends to go parallel to the costa. The wing is invariably darker in advance of this mark.
The larvae mine the underside of the leaf from where the ovum was laid to a small blotch mine. They then roll the leaf from the tip sealing the ends by turning the leaf side lobes or on A. pseudoplatanus form a neat cone. More Info
Caloptilia hauderi (Rebel, 1906) Caloptilia hauderi was considered a British species until a publication in 2011 concluded that it was a Spring form of Caloptilia semifascia. However it has now been shown to be a distinct species by DNA barcoding. More Info . Caloptilia hauderi may be present in Suffolk but its status is not known owing to confusion with C. semifascia. The species appears to be single brooded hibernating as adult. The species has a sharply defined yellow or white broad costal blotch. The larvae feed on Acer campestre. More Info
