Caloptilia fidella

(Reutti, 1853)289a / 15.0115

Morley’s Final Catalogue: Not listed.

Recent Status: A species that expanded its range in Europe and was first detected in the UK as an adult in Suffolk during July 2020. More adult records followed in 2021 along with evidence of breeding, with mines/leaf cones found on Hops at a number of sites. Records suggest the species is moving inland following river valleys where the foodplant can be found.

Life Style: A double brooded species that hibernates as adult moth. The flight period given for the near continent excludes just one month, July, so it seems likely it can be found throughout the year. The species feeds on Humulus lupulus (Hop) and also Celtris australis (The Nettle Tree).

Identification: Caloptilia species stand erect on their front legs at rest. The crown, thorax and wings base colour of C. fidella is dark chestnut brown. The tarsi are white. The anterior section of the abdomen is pale coloured. The face palps and wings are marked yellow and/or white. The wing mark is a well defined square-topped broad triangular blotch that is variably dark speckled. The costal half of the blotch continues diffusely to the wing tip. The costa has dark spots.
The ovum is laid in a vein axil on the underside of a leaf. A small triangular blotch mine is formed with scattered frass. The larvae then roll a leaf tip downwards to feed in that. Three such rolls are made before pupation in a silken cocoon placed on the underside of the leaf. More Info
