Caloptilia stigmatella

(Fabricius, 1781)288 / 15.010

Morley’s Final Catalogue: One on poplar in Bentley Woods in 1900 (Pyett) and bred thence in 1931-5 (Whit.); rare on reeds in Ipswich marshes in September and October 1895 (Mly); Leiston on sallow (Grey).

Recent Status: Common in Suffolk.

Life Style: A double brooded species that hibernates and comes to light. The larvae feed on species of Populus, Salix and occasionally also on Betula. They pupate under a silken membrane on either side of the leaf.

Identification: Caloptilia species stand erect on their front legs at rest. C. stigmatella has orange to deep red brown wings that can be mottled indistinctly with white or yellow and can have purple reflections. They have a large white or yellow costal blotch that is triangular or with a short flat top and may have a backwards pointing extension at the top. There may be spots along the costa. The costal blotch may also be diffusely mottled darker.
The larvae mine on the underside of a leaf from where the ovum was laid. They mine to the outer edge where a blotch is formed. They leave this to roll the tip of the leaf upwards or downwards into a cone. At least two such cones may be used. More Info
