Caloptilia rufipennella

Recent Status: Common in Suffolk.

Life Style: A double brooded species that hibernates and can be found throughout the year. The larvae feed on Acer species leaves, preferring Acer pseudoplatanus. They pupate beneath a membrane on the underside of a leaf.

Identification: Caloptilia species stand erect on their front legs at rest. C. rufipennella is a small Caloptilia. It is a readily recognised species it has an orange brown forewing sometimes paler and with variable dark spotting. The femur and tibia of the front legs are dark brown or black in sharp contrast to the wing colour. The tarsi are white. There is no similar Suffolk species.
The larvae feed in a short brownish underside mine on Sycamore before down-rolling leaf tips. More Info
