Caloptilia betulicola

(Hering, 1927)283 / 15.005

Morley’s Final Catalogue: Not listed.

Recent Status: Not a commonly recorded species in Suffolk but can be frequent in areas where Betula is common.

Life Style: A double brooded species that hibernates. It may be found throughout the year and comes to light.. The larvae feed on Betula leaves. They pupate beneath a membrane.

Identification: Caloptilia species stand erect on the front legs at rest. C. betulicola is a variable species. With yellow marked orange brown forewings they may be almost unicolorous, similar to C. elongella or well marked with yellow and similar to C. hemidactylella. The femur and tibia of the front pairs of legs are similar coloured to the wings so cannot be confused with C. rufipennella. The hindlegs are white. Where there is uncertain identification genitalia dissection is required. More Info The larvae hatch from an ovum either side of a leaf. They feed in a short gallery to a blotch and then leave the mine to roll a birch leaf downwards from the tip.

Retained Specimen / Photograph will be Required.

Mine: Either the leaf or a good photograph required
