Caloptilia elongella

(Linnaeus, 1761)282 / 15.004

Morley’s Final Catalogue: Not very commonly beaten from bushes in Bentley Woods during August, November, March and April 1895-1934 (Mly); Flixton near Bungay in April 1891 (Ctw); Reydon in September 1935 (Baker); Sutton and Thetford (Whit.); Blythbro (Gd).

Recent Status: Commonly recorded in Suffolk

Life Style: A double possibly triple brooded species that hibernates. It comes to light and can be found throughout the year. The larvae feed on Alnus species. They pupate under a membrane on the underside of a leaf.

Identification: Caloptilia stand erect on their front legs at rest. This species is one of the less well marked Caloptilia species. It has a variable colour from dull brown to bright yellow ochre. It has variable darker spots and patches. It often has a paler streak centrally from the base and along the costa. There may sometimes be a pale or yellowish indistinct patch on the costa. The femur and tibia are similarly coloured to the wing. It may sometimes be similar to forms of C. betulicola then dissection is then necessary for identification. More Info
The larvae feed from a small gallery on the upperside of a leaf where the ovum was laid. This becomes a blotch. They then leave this to roll a leaf longitudinally. A second roll is produced.
