Caloptilia populetorum

(Zeller, 1839)281 / 15.003

Morley’s Final Catalogue: Not listed.

Recent Status: Regularly recorded in Suffolk

Life Style: A double brooded species that hibernates. It can be found throughout the year. The larvae feed on Betula leaves. They pupate in a cocoon under a membrane on the leaf.

Identification: Caloptilia species stand erect on their front legs at rest. C. populetorum is a pale species of a pale cream colour varying to dirty pale ochre. It is marked with dark brown or black. This colours the femur and tibia of the front legs, the cilia and three spots two along and just above the dorsum and one centrally on the costa. There is then a variable spotting or shading over the rest of the wing. There is no similar Suffolk species.
The larvae mine a long narrow gallery before a blotch. They leave this to upwardly roll a leaf longitudinally. The genitalia are distinctive. More Info

Mine: Moth needs to be reared and, in some cases, possibly dissected.
