Bucculatrix bechsteinella

(Bechstein & Scharfenberg, 1805)275 / 14.012

Morley’s Final Catalogue: Not listed.

Recent Status: One of the more commonly recorded species of Bucculatrix in Suffolk.

Life Style: A double brooded species flying from May to August. Flies by day and night and comes to light. The larvae feed on leaves of Crataegus, Pyrus, Sorbus and Malus. They pupate away from the larval habitation in a white, ribbed cocoon. The autumn larvae pupate to pass the winter.

Identification: Buccculatrix are small moths with a prominent tuft on the head.
B bechsteinella has a whitish, brown mixed head. The wings are white and heavily marked with mid-brown scales. These coalesce in particular as a dash mid wing from the base, three wedge shaped marks on the costa, one at one half on the dorsum and at the tornus. There are dark brown/black scales especially at the mid dorsal mark and a short dash at the end of the discal cell. Care should be taken in separating this species and B. albedinella. More Info The larvae initially feed in a contorted mine and later externally on the leaf. More Info
