Bedellia somnulentella

Morley’s Final Catalogue: Bred in 1932 by Dr. Whittingham at Haiesworth.

Recent Status: Found in Suffolk but not common. More regularly recorded as leaf-mines.

Life Style: The moth is double brooded. The second brood hibernates to reappear the following year through till June. The larvae feed on Convolvulus, Calystegia or Ipomoea species. The pupa hangs from a thread beneath a leaf.

Identification: The moth is small, narrow winged and stands slightly erect on its front legs at rest. The wings are ochreous with many small black speckles. The head has a characteristic hair style with erect scales forming a double tuft. The moth can also be recorded from the larval feeding habits. More Info
The egg is elongate and laid on either side of a leaf .The larvae initially mine, creating a tortuous gallery and then a clear blotch. They later feed externally from a slight web and will change leaves.
