Lyonetia clerkella

(Linnaeus, 1758)263 / 21.001

Morley’s Final Catalogue: Bentley Woods in Feb.-March, and Warren Heath in Ipswich during November (Mly); Ipswich and Lackford, bred (Whit.); common among crab-apples at Glemham Magna (Bloomf.); Southwold in 1897, and Flixton (Ctw); Gorleston in October.

Recent Status: A very common species in Suffolk.

Life Style: A multi-brooded species with the adult hibernating. Can be found at any time of the year and comes to light. The larvae mine a long sinuous gallery on Betula later in the year and on a wide range of deciduous tree species at other times of the year. These are primarily Rosaceae. They pupate in a loose cocoon beneath a light spinning on the foodplant.

Identification: A small narrow winged species. The head is scale tufted. The wings can be silvery white, grey or brown. There is a prominent large dark oval patch at three quarters, followed by fine dark fasciae and a terminal black spot. The superficially similar Phyllocnistis have a smooth scaled head. L. prunifoliella is larger and lacks the oval patch.

Recorded in 56 (97%) of 58 10k Squares.
