Ectoedemia argyropeza

(Zeller, 1839)23 / 4.085

Morley’s Final Catalogue: Not listed. Nepticulids were not well studied only 21 species listed.

Recent Status: An uncommon species in Suffolk.

Life Style: The adult moth is found during June and July. They are parthenogenetic. Oviposition is on a leaf stalk of Populus tremula. The larvae mine the stem and leaf. They construct a cocoon for hibernation in the fallen leaf and pupate in the spring.

Identification: The moth has a yellow/orange head and collar. The scape, cilia and two diffuse opposed spots on the costa and dorsum are white. The forewing colour is dark grey. The moth can be identified by breeding out from a mine or by genitalia dissection.
The larvae cause a slight leaf stem gall that causes disfigurement of the leaf. They then move into the leaf blade where they mine within a ‘green island’ that remains after leaf-fall when they can be found. More Info
