Monopis laevigella

([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775)227 / 12.036

Morley’s Final Catalogue: Not always attached to dwellings, though usually in sheds. Copdock; Bentley Woods and on sugar at Benacre Broad, both far from dwellings; in Ipswich houses and gardens, frequent in Monks Soham outhouses but probably is never actually attracted to light; Gorleston. Maidcross Hill in Lakenheath, a full mile from any dwelling, on 13 June 1899. Many tinea rusticella bred from larvae feeding in Owls' casts at Timworth (Nurse. Entom. 1906, 160).

Recent Status: Well recorded in Suffolk.

Life Style: Flies from April to September with two broods in a year. The larvae are detritivores on material of animal origin, for example in bird nests, owl pellets, fur and feeding from a silken tunnel.

Identification:Monopis weaverella and M. laevigella are very similar. M. weaverella has a more prominent ochre tornal spot. M. laevigella has slightly narrower more pointed wings. The hyaline spot in M. weaverella is a little larger and closer to the middle of the wing than in M. laevigella thus giving M. laevigella a relatively longer distal two thirds. M. laevigella on average is more speckled with paler scales. M. weaverella 13 to 18mm. M. laevigella 13 to 20mm. More Info
