Epichnopterix plumella

([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775)189 / 11.014

Morley’s Final Catalogue: Flying not uncommonly at Foxhall pond during May 1898- 1907; Oulton Broad in 1905; and Blythburgh Heath in 1934 (Mly); Henham (Gd). Lakenheath (Eedle in ' Fenland').

Recent Status: The species has been reliably recorded recently.

Life Style: The species is single brooded. The males fly in sunshine during April, May and June. The females are apterous. The larvae feed on grasses within a portable case. They pupate in the case.

Identification: The male moth in flight is similar to Psyche casta. They are dark fuscous with strongly pectinate antennae and differ from Psyche species in having fine hair-like scales rather than the broader scales of Psyche. The apterous females also have a greatly reduced head and legs and do not move from the larval case where eggs are laid following mating.
The larval case is covered with flat grass pieces and is only distinguished from that of Whittleia retiella by the 8 mm or more size at maturity. More Info
