Antispila petryi

Martini, 1899159a / 6.002

Morley’s Final Catalogue: Not listed.

Recent Status: Not recorded frequently.

Life Style: The moth flies in sunshine during May, June and July. The larvae form a blotch mine with a very short initial gallery in Cornus sanguinea. More Info They pupate in a oval cut out from the edge of the blotch which falls to the ground.

Identification: A. petryi is the smaller of the two Antispila found in Suffolk at 5 to 6 mm wingspan. The forewing is a dark coppery brown and does not have a purple sheen. It has a silver fascia in the basal half and two silver spots that are staggered in the distal half. They hold their wings flat against the body in a tent-like fashion. The antennae are two thirds the wing length and the palps very short. More Info The larvae can be separated from A. metallella by a measurement of the long axis of the oval cut out at 4 to 5.5 mm. For A. metallella this is 5.5 to 7 mm.

Verification Grade Comment: Make sure host plant is Cornus sanguinea (Common dogwood)
