Antispila treitschkiella

(Fischer von Roslerstamm, 1843)159 / 6.0021

Morley’s Final Catalogue: Not listed.

Recent Status: A paper by van Nieukerken et al (2018) showed that Antispila treitschkiella feeds on Cornelian Cherry Cornus mas and has two generations a year. It was first found in the UK in London in 2016.
The Dogwood Cornus sanguinea feeding species formerly named Antispila treitschkiella is now named Antispila petryi.
All previous Suffolk treitschkiella records have now been reassigned to that species.

First noted in the county as leaf mines on Cornus mas on 28/07/2024 at Lackford (G. Moates).

Life Style: The moth flies in sunshine during April to June and then again in July and August. The larvae form a blotch mine with a very short initial gallery in Cornus mas. They pupate in a oval cut out from the edge of the blotch which falls to the ground.

Identification: Very similar to Antispila petryi so dissection is necessary to identify the adults. The leaf mines are distinctive as they are only found on Cornus mas.
