Phycitodes maritima

(Tengström, 1848)1485 / 62.057

Morley’s Final Catalogue: An apparently scarce coast species, but feeding on common Ragwort: Observed at Southwold in both 1891 and 1897 by Canon C. T. Crutwell of Denton in Norfolk; and before 1890 at Lowestoft by Dr. Crowfoot.

Recent Status: Well recorded at coastal locations with some records inland.

Life Style: A double brooded species flying at night and coming to light. The larvae feed on the flower and seed heads of certain Compositae spinning heads together. First generation larvae pupate in a cocoon on the ground. The second generation overwinter and pupate in the spring

Identification: Phycitodes maritima is smaller than the much more boldly marked Phycitodes binaevella with which it should not be confused. However it a similar size to P. saxicola and Homoeosoma nimbella and because of the variability found in these species they can only be reliably identified by genitalia dissection.
