Vitula biviella

(Zeller, 1848)1478b / 62.061

Morley’s Final Catalogue: Not listed

Recent Status: First recorded in Britain during 1997 and in Suffolk during 2006. Well established particularly in the south east of Suffolk and found across the county.

Life Style: A single brooded species with a relatively short flight period of June to August. The moth flies at night and comes to light. The larvae feed during spring on the male inflorescence of Pinus species. They pupate in a spinning close to the feeding location.

Identification: Vitula biviella shows a triangular shape at rest. The forewings are a grey brown colour with an orange brown tint on the head and thorax, extending into the basal part of the forewing. White scales form a fairly straight pre median line and a slightly dentate post median line. The dark double discal spots are placed at one third the distance from the post to the pre median line. There is a peppering of white scales over much of the forewing but is mostly clear in the median band against the lines.
